9 Amazing Facts You Didn't Know About Space

1. SPACE IS COMPLETELY SILENT

Space is a vacuum, which means it is devoid of any matter or particles, including air molecules that are required for sound to travel. As a result, there is no medium for sound waves to propagate, and space is completely silent.

Even though there are some sources of electromagnetic radiation in space, such as radio waves or gamma rays, which can be detected by instruments and converted into sound, these are not actually sounds that can be heard in space.

Therefore, unlike on Earth, where we can hear sounds and noise all around us, space is a completely silent environment.

2. THE HOTTEST PLANET IN OUR SOLAR SYSTEM IS 450° C.

The hottest planet in our solar system is actually Venus, with a surface temperature that averages around 460°C (860°F). This makes Venus the hottest planet in our solar system, even hotter than Mercury, which is closest to the sun.

The extreme heat on Venus is due to its thick atmosphere, which is primarily composed of carbon dioxide, with clouds of sulfuric acid. This traps heat from the sun and creates a runaway greenhouse effect, causing the planet's surface temperatures to soar.

3. A FULL NASA SPACE SUIT COSTS $12,000,000

The cost of a full NASA space suit is actually much higher than $12,000,000. According to a report by NASA's Office of Inspector General, the agency has spent over $200 million on the development of the latest space suit, called the Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU).

4. THE SUN’S MASS TAKES UP 99.86% OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM

The Sun accounts for 99.86% of the mass in our solar system with a mass of around 330,000 times that of Earth. Did you know that the Sun is made up of mostly hydrogen (three quarters worth) with the rest of its mass attributed to helium.  If the Sun had a voice would it be high and squeaky from all that helium?

5. ONE MILLION EARTHS CAN FIT INSIDE THE SUN

The sun is an incredibly large object, with a diameter of about 1.4 million kilometers (870,000 miles). Its volume is so enormous that it can contain about 1.3 million Earths.

To be more precise, the sun's volume is approximately 1.41 x 10^18 cubic kilometers, while the volume of Earth is about 1.08 x 10^12 cubic kilometers. Therefore, you could fit about 1.3 million Earths inside the sun.

This gives an idea of just how massive and impressive the sun is compared to our own planet. However, it's important to note that the sun's size is not the only thing that makes it so important to us. Without the sun's heat and light, life on Earth would not be possible.

6. THERE ARE MORE TREES ON EARTH THAN STARS IN THE MILKY WAY

There are about three trillion trees on Planet Earth, and between 100-400 billion stars, approximately, in the galaxy.

7. THE SUNSET ON MARS APPEARS BLUE

Just as colors are made more dramatic in sunsets on Earth, sunsets on Mars, according to NASA,  would appear bluish to human observers watching from the red planet. Fine dust makes the blue near the Sun's part of the sky much more visibilke, while normal daylight makes the Red Planet's familiar rusty dust color the most perceptible to the human eye.

8. ONE DAY ON VENUS IS LONGER THAN ONE YEAR.

Venus takes approximately 243 Earth days to rotate once on its axis, which is much longer than the time it takes Venus to orbit around the sun. Venus's orbital period around the sun is about 225 Earth days. This means that a day on Venus (the time it takes to complete one rotation on its axis) is longer than a year on Venus (the time it takes to complete one orbit around the sun).

9. THERE IS A PLANET MADE OF DIAMONDS

In 2004, scientists discovered a planet called PSR J1719-1438 that orbits a dead star, known as a pulsar, located about 4,000 light-years from Earth. This planet is believed to be about five times the size of Earth and is incredibly dense, with a mass greater than that of Jupiter.

Based on its density, scientists speculate that the planet is made primarily of carbon, which under the intense pressure and heat conditions on the planet, would crystallize into diamond. This has led to the nickname "diamond planet" for PSR J1719-1438b.
